Description

Phyla dulcis, also known as Aztek Sweet Herb or honeyherb, is a tropical flowering herb of the verbana family. Native to southern Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America, this plant produces flower buds which are sold as dushi or dulce buttons. It is grown as an outdoor annual in Québec, or as an edible evergreen perennial houseplant. Aztec Sweet Herb is a creeping, cascading plant that looks lovely in hangers or in tall planters. The leaves and flowers are very pretty and sweet!

Plant Care and Propagation
This easy-to-grow tropical plant thrives in full or partial sunshine. Place it in a loamy soil mix either in the ground or in a pot. If keeping it indoors, add compost from time to time and repot or cut back once it has outgrown its container. Allow the soil to dry before watering again, and allow drainage. This creeper will propagate via the root system, which can be split in spring.

Flowering and Harvesting
Aztec Sweet Herb self-pollinates. Leaf tips and some leaves will turn purple. Pretty white flower buttons will bud during summer. Leaves and flowers can be used in salads or tea, and as a medicinal plant for several conditions.
