Eggplant – Black Beauty

$4.50

Over 100 years old, this 1902 Burpee introduction was an immediate hit because the fruits ripen dramatically earlier than other varieties. A standard open-pollinated Italian eggplant with high yields and no spines. It boasts big yields of large, glossy, delectable fruit that is a deep purple so intense it looks black. Large bell-shaped fruits range from ½ to 1½ kg (1-3 lb) have a slight signature ribbing.

Price is for seed packets. Plants are available at store.

Growing
In our short growing season, eggplants need to be started indoors in early spring. You can purchase seedlings at a garden centre, or start seeds yourself for transplanting. Once your eggplant is in the ground, cover the ground with dark river stones to trap the sun’s heat and keep the roots warm when the temperature drops at night. Eggplant can benefit from regular sprays with kelp fertilizer while they are setting fruit.
