Chamomile – German

$4.50

Lovely as an ornamental edging or as an evergreen mat of ferny leaves, bearing fluffy white flowers in early summer. Flowers are dried and used for a relaxing tea. Derived from Greek — chamos (ground) and melos (apple), reflecting the fact that the plant grows low to the ground, and the fresh blooms have a pleasing apple scent. Chamomile has been used as a medicine for thousands of years, dating back to the ancient Egyptians, Romans, and Greeks.

Description

Botanical name
Matricaria recutita

Family
Asteraceae

Spacing
4 plants per square foot in 2 rows 15 cm (6″) apart

Depth
Only just cover the seeds as they require light to sprout.

Requirements
Full or partial sun and a slightly acid-to-neutral (pH 6.6-7.8) garden soil with good drainage. A rich soil will produce lush leaf growth but few flowers.

Germination
Seeds will sprout in 10-14 days

Pests
Not bothered by many pests and often recommended as a companion plant. However, when weakened by lack of water or other issues may be attacked by aphids, mealybugs or thrips.

Timing
Sow indoors 6 weeks before last expected winter frost. Plant out after last frost. Direct seed in the early spring or in the fall to overwinter.

Growing
Needs very little care once established. Like most herbs, it grows best when it is not fussed over. Too much fertilizer will result in lots of weakly flavored foliage and few flowers. Drought tolerant; water only in times of prolonged drought. Plants should be clipped or mowed to 5 cm (2″) after blooming to keep them compact.

Harvest
30 days, blooms for 8 weeks

Season
Warm, perennial
