Currant – Red Lake

This compact, mounding, deciduous shrub grows to 1-1.5 m (3-5′) tall. Clusters of greenish-yellow flowers bloom in spring andd give way to long, pendant clusters of bright red currants in July. The tart fruit can be eaten ripe off the shrub, or be harvested to make jams, jellies and pies.

Dig a hole deeper and wider than the root ball.

Requirements
Prefers organically rich well-drained soil, medium moisture with a pH of 6-6.8. Chose a site with partial shade to full sun.

Pests
Scale, cane borer, aphids, powdery mildew, white pine blister rust (avoid planting near white pines)

Timing
Best time to plant is September to early October, or April to early May.

Growing
Pinch off flowers the first year to establish a strong root and cane. Adequate watering, weed prevention and regular pruning are key.
