Smooth, round roots average 7-10 cm (3-4″) in diameter, are white below the soil line and bright purple above. Both the large, lobed greens and roots are good steamed or eaten raw in salads. Best eaten when young and tender. The flavour is mildly spicy like radishes.

Spacing
Sow 5-8 cm (2-3″) between plants, 46-76 cm (18- 30″) between rows.

Depth
Plant seeds ½-1 cm (¼-½”) deep.

Requirements
Prefers full sun and a fertile, well drained soil, with a pH range of 6.0-7.5.

Germination
Seeds will sprout in 7-10 days.

Pests
Aphids and flea beetles. Wash off aphids with a strong jet of water.  Keep weeds in the garden down to control flea beetles.

Timing
Sow early spring (2 to 3 weeks before the average last frost date) through late summer.  Turnips are tolerant of moderate frost as seedlings in spring, and as mature plants in fall.

Growing
Keep planting beds weed free. Overcrowding may cause small roots. Mulch turnips with straw to protect the tuber tops from sunburn.
